Musk announces gold, gray and blue badges for Twitter accounts

| By AFP |

Twitter’s billionaire owner Elon Musk announced Friday that the platform would be launching differently colored badges to distinguish between accounts.

“Sorry for the delay, we’re tentatively launching Verified on Friday next week,” he tweeted.

“Gold check for companies, grey check for government, blue for individuals (celebrity or not) and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activates.”

In another tweet, Musk said that all verified individual accounts would have the same blue check, but some would eventually be able to display a “secondary tiny logo showing they belong to an org(anization) if verified as such by that org(anization)”.

The Tesla and SpaceX boss’ proposal for users to be able to pay to be “verified” and obtain a blue badge on their profiles has caused confusion since he acquired the social media giant last month.

Musk proposed a subscription fee of $8 a month to allow users to obtain the blue check — which was previously free but reserved for organizations and public figures in an attempt to avoid impersonation and misinformation.

The first rollout of Musk’s subscription plan in early November quickly went south, with many accounts paying for the blue check and then impersonating world leaders, celebrities or companies.

Responding to the backlash, Musk initially postponed the launch date to November 29, before delaying it once more. It now appears the feature will launch on December 2.

Musk has said that he wants to charge users for subscriptions to the social media platform to diversify its income stream. Twitter currently depends on advertising for 90 percent of its revenue.

Several major brands have withdrawn from advertising on the platform since Musk bought it, fearing that his promised relaxation of content moderation could open their companies up to being associated with objectionable content.

According to the NGO Media Matters, half of Twitter’s top 100 advertisers have announced that they are suspending or “have apparently suspended” their spending on the social network.

The president of Mexico asks Celac to join in his complaint before the ICJ against Ecuador

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked on Tuesday at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) to join his complaint against Ecuador in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) after the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito.

“We appreciate the solidarity of most of the peoples and the Governments of Latin America and the Caribbean, and we also want to propose to them, if they consider it feasible and feasible, that they accompany us by signing the complaint in the international court of justice,” the president declared in his initial message.

López Obrador reaffirmed that his complaint seeks “an expulsion from Ecuador from the United Nations, as long as there is no apology and an offer of non-repetition, never again to make a scoundrel” such as the raid on Mexico’s diplomatic headquarters on April 5.

The Mexican ruler expressed earlier to his peers that he considers a “afflance” and a “flagrant violation” of Mexico’s sovereignty and international law the raid carried out by the Ecuadorian Police at the Embassy to take former Vice President Jorge Glas (2013-2017), sheltered there in the face of a corruption process.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro was categorical in stating that “Ecuador and Israel practically shaking hands in the competition for barbarism. I invite you to deepen the inter-American human rights system.”

For his part, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said that the assault on the Mexican embassy in Ecuador is “unacceptable,” “affects everyone” and that something similar did not happen even in “the gloomy times of dictatorships.”

Lula considered that “a formal request for apology from Ecuador” would be a “first step in the right direction,” according to the speech disseminated by the Presidency.

Cuba was not far behind and President Miguel Díaz-Canel stressed his country’s rejection of the “unacceptable” police raid on the Mexican embassy in Ecuador and reiterated his “firm support” for the North American country.

“Mexico has our firm support in the actions they take in the face of this unacceptable breach of international law,” Díaz-Canel said.

Uruguay will not participate in the Celac Summit, understanding that it suffered a change in the “rules of the game” and stopped working supported by consensus, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the South American country, Omar Paganini, said on Tuesday.

Nicolás Maduro announces the closure of the Venezuelan Embassy and consulates in Ecuador

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced on Tuesday, at the virtual meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), the closure of the Embassy and consulates of the Caribbean nation in Ecuador, in support of Mexico, after the assault by the Ecuadorian Police on the diplomatic headquarters of this country.

“In the face of that aberrant act of arrogance of President (Daniel) Noboa (…) I have ordered the closure of our Embassy in Ecuador, the closure of the Consulate in Quito, the immediate closure of the Consulate in Guayaquil and that the diplomatic personnel return to Venezuela, immediately,” the president said at the meeting.

Maduro gave the order to the chargé d’affaires – head of Venezuela’s diplomatic mission in Ecuador -, Pedro Sassone, to return to the Caribbean nation “until international law is expressly restored.”

The Venezuelan president indicated that the assault by the Ecuadorian Police on the Embassy of Mexico was an “act of barbarism,” so he expressed his support for Mexico’s proposal to expel Ecuador from the United Nations (UN) “until he apologizes to the international community and restores the situation to its original legal status.”

“The (former) Vice President Jorge Glas must be returned to the Embassy of Mexico, recognize him political asylum, give him the approval and travel to recover his physical health from torture, in Mexico,” he added.

The leaders of the Celac are meeting this Tuesday, virtually, to address this incident, for which Mexico filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ), in which it asks to suspend Ecuador from the UN until it offers a public apology for indening its diplomatic headquarters.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked at the virtual summit to be in his complaint against Ecuador in the ICJ.

López Obrador reaffirmed that his complaint seeks “an expulsion from Ecuador from the United Nations, as long as there is no apology and an offer of non-repetition, never again to make a scoundrel” such as the raid on Mexico’s diplomatic headquarters on April 5.

The president of Ecuador denounces “sabotage” and calls for investigation for power cuts

The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, denounced an alleged “sabotage” and asked for an investigation into the power cuts generated since last weekend in different parts of the country, in the face of the impossibility of meeting all the national demand.

“We have initiated an investigation for sabotage, because, in certain areas, in certain power plants, there has been sabotage. We are not going to allow that to happen, and they do it miserable the last week before a popular consultation because they know that they had it lost,” he said without mentioning any name of possible perpetrators.

Noboa added that they have declared the country’s energy sector in an “emergency” and said that he has requested the resignation of the Minister of Energy and Mines, Andrea Arrobo, who last Friday had assured that there would be no blackouts in the short term despite pointing out that the largest reservoir in the country was at its minimum level.

“This investigation is not going to rest, we have already submitted (the complaint to) the Prosecutor’s Office,” he said, adding that “every person involved will be considered, not only a traitor to the homeland, but a threat to national security.”

The ruler added: “No one is going to ‘count’ me (tell a story) in the last second that we have to give five hours of blackout to (the province of) Guayas. We are not going to give more blackouts this week,” he said without mentioning whether the decision applies only to Guayas, whose capital is the port city of Guayaquil, or to the whole country.

“To counteract the actions of these miserable people, we will cover 50% of the electricity sheet of the homes of the month of April,” he said amid the applause of the attendees of a scholarship ceremony.

The ruler opined that there are those who “today want to deceive Ecuador into saying that we are not prepared for this fight, that we are not prepared to face narco-terrorism.”

“But here, forcefully, with courage, we will not give rest to any of these criminals, nor to the politicians, nor to the former officials, nor to the former presidents, nor to any of these terrorists who today want to end the hope of our youth and the Ecuadorian family,” he added.

His adversaries, he said, take advantage of the needs of the most vulnerable “to see if they turn around a popular consultation that Ecuador requested and that Ecuador is going to vote ‘Yes’.”

More than 13 million Ecuadorians are called to the polls next Sunday to vote in a referendum on security, justice and employment issues.

Among the questions are the possibility of the military permanently supporting the Police in the control of the security of the country and the extradition of Ecuadorians required by the Justice of other countries, among other issues such as the recognition of international arbitrations in any jurisdiction and hourly labor contracts.
