Social movements rejected tax reform in Ecuador

Trade unions in Ecuador rejected the tax reform of Daniel Noboa, which on the other hand received the majority support of the parliamentarians of the National Assembly of Ecuador.

After the approval of the tax reform by 107 of the 137 legislators that are part of the Assembly, unionists called for several protests and threatened to take to the streets for next year 2024.

In the Assembly, about twenty legislators from Pachakutik and Sociedad Patriótica did not support the bill, because they considered that it only benefits the big defaulters.

Likewise, the social movements considered that the postponement of payments of the internal public debt for 30 years will cut funds for the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS).

On the other hand, the social movements said that the regulation approved by the Assembly does not benefit the Ecuadorian people because it gives respite to the big tax evaders of the highest social classes.

It should be recalled that the reform proposes a tax amnesty or interest pardon for delinquent taxpayers, in exchange for paying the capital of their obligations.

Zelenski urges global action after russian ballistic missile strike

Putin warns of escalation, suggests strikes on western weapon suppliers

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the conflict in Ukraine is taking on the characteristics of a “global war,” warning that Russia might target Western nations supplying Ukraine with weapons used in attacks on Russian territory.

These remarks come after a day of heightened tensions, during which Russia launched a state-of-the-art medium-range missile designed to carry a nuclear warhead. However, this particular missile was loaded with conventional explosives.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the missile strike, calling it the action of a “deranged neighbor” using Ukraine as a “military testing ground.”

Earlier, Ukraine accused Russia of attacking the central-eastern city of Dnipro with a missile exhibiting “all the characteristics” of an intercontinental missile, an unprecedented development in the ongoing conflict.
