Dismembered bodies of five found in Guanajuato pickup truck

The dismembered bodies of at least five people, stuffed into plastic bags, were discovered in a municipality in the violent Mexican state of Guanajuato, according to authorities and local media.

The human remains were stacked in the bed of a gray pickup truck, abandoned early Thursday near the community of Cupareo in the municipality of Salvatierra, detailed the local government in a statement. While the authorities did not specify the exact number of victims, sources close to the investigation told AFP that it involved five individuals.

The discovery was initially made by police officers from the neighboring municipality of Yuriria. Agents from the National Guard and investigators from the state prosecutor’s office later arrived at the scene. The prosecutor’s office subsequently issued a statement confirming that forensic studies were underway.

A banner with a message from a criminal group claiming responsibility for the massacre was found alongside the bodies. According to Infobae, the note read: “The cleanup begins! Only people of Señor Mencho” and “Only CJNG here.”

Nearly 40 dead in Istanbul after consuming contaminated alcohol in six weeks

Almost 40 people have died in Istanbul in the past six weeks after consuming adulterated alcohol, local authorities announced on Monday.

In total, “37 people lost their lives, 77 people were poisoned, with 17 still undergoing treatment due to the consumption of contaminated alcohol since November 1, 2024,” stated the Istanbul governor’s office on social media platform X.

At least 14 people have been arrested for distributing the illicit alcohol, authorities added. Alcohol poisoning is common in Turkey due to the surge in illegal production driven by rising taxes on alcoholic beverages.

In late 2021, at least 25 people died in several provinces within a few days. The previous year, around 40 people lost their lives from the same cause.

Rakı, the national alcoholic drink, costs around 1,300 Turkish liras ($37) per liter in supermarkets, in a country where the minimum wage is 17,000 liras ($489).
