Milan’s Via MonteNapoleone overtakes Fifth Avenue as world’s most expensive retail destination

A commercial real estate company has selected Via MonteNapoleone in Milan as the world’s most expensive retail destination, surpassing the prestigious Fifth Avenue in New York. Shoppers, laden with bags from Fendi, Loewe, Prada, and other designer brands, crowd the narrow sidewalks of Milan’s most fashionable shopping street, bringing joy to high-end luxury goods sellers this holiday season—and beyond.

This year, there is even more reason to celebrate: a commercial real estate company has crowned Via MonteNapoleone as the world’s most expensive retail destination, pushing Fifth Avenue in New York down the rankings.

The latest edition of the annual global index from U.S. firm Cushman & Wakefield, which ranks shopping areas based on the rental prices they command, highlights Via MonteNapoleone’s desirability as a prime address for luxury ready-to-wear brands, jewelry, and even patisseries.

The average rent on Milan’s street has surged to 20,000 euros ($21,016) per square meter, compared to 19,537 euros ($20,529) per square meter for an 11-block stretch of upper Fifth Avenue.

Nearly 40 dead in Istanbul after consuming contaminated alcohol in six weeks

Almost 40 people have died in Istanbul in the past six weeks after consuming adulterated alcohol, local authorities announced on Monday.

In total, “37 people lost their lives, 77 people were poisoned, with 17 still undergoing treatment due to the consumption of contaminated alcohol since November 1, 2024,” stated the Istanbul governor’s office on social media platform X.

At least 14 people have been arrested for distributing the illicit alcohol, authorities added. Alcohol poisoning is common in Turkey due to the surge in illegal production driven by rising taxes on alcoholic beverages.

In late 2021, at least 25 people died in several provinces within a few days. The previous year, around 40 people lost their lives from the same cause.

Rakı, the national alcoholic drink, costs around 1,300 Turkish liras ($37) per liter in supermarkets, in a country where the minimum wage is 17,000 liras ($489).
